ASUPERCHARGER, 211BHP AND an extra wheel… the 2018 crop of new and revamped bikes proved some motorcycle manufacturers are innovating like never before. It makes for exciting showrooms and stand-out bikes for a lucky few, but innovation does not necessarily mean victory in Bike’s Bike of the Year competition… That’s primarily because we’re more concerned with how they ride and – ultimately – how they make you feel. Our judges – who rode every bike they voted for – marked machines on their fitness for purpose (so a tourer loses many points if it is uncomfortable, and none if it can’t lap Mallory in under a minute), plus their value, build-quality and fun. The results are fascinating, with a huge variety of bikes in the Top Ten. And yes, some of those innovators were near the top, but the winner – unanimously voted by judges – just did the basics extraordinarily well…
