Harley announce 2020 metal, and one of them is a proper adventure bike.
Over the last five years Harley-davidson seemed like a hibernating grizzly, oblivious to the world moving on outside its cave. Repeated sales falls and warnings that younger riders were abandoning the brand were met with the sound of snoring and a new colour option on the FXSB Softail Breakout (or whatever). But all was not what it seemed. Rather than snoozing, Harley were busy building prototypes. Lots of prototypes. The recent batch of Softails was just the start. A shock announcement by Harley this month revealed that… The Pan America, a 1250cc V-twin adventure bike, will be launched in 2020. This is one of 16 new ‘middleweight’ models (ie not the 1600cc+ Big Twins) using two all-new engines, one that can be either 500 or 750cc and the other 975 or 1250cc. As you can see from the photo, it’s a liquid-cooled, 60-degree V with DOHC (ie no pushrods). Styling of the Pan America appears to be a curious mash-up of a Morbidelli V8 and BMW R1200GS. The new 1250cc engine will also power the Custom, which has the same tough, Mad Max styling theme as the recent Fat Bob. There’s also a 975cc Streetfighter (not sure how Ducati will feel about the name, given that they used it first in 2009). This is perhaps the most attractive of the bunch, looking like a Ducati Diavel that’s given up its cruiser

pretensions. Both these will appear in 2020. Livewire will be launched in 2019. Unless someone pulls a fast one, it will the first production electric motorcycle built by a major manufacturer. This will be followed by all manner of Harley electric two wheelers, down to mountain bikes. The idea is they get youngsters onto Harleys, who then go on to buy bigger machines. There will also be links with ‘global leading e-commerce providers’ to sell bikes. Harleys on Amazon? Don’t count it out. There will be 250cc to 500cc bikes made in Asia for the huge Asian market and more shops in malls selling Harley clobber.
