Tighten those nuts

- Hugo Wilson

Norar Pro 50 torque wrench Used for: 25 years Price: £119 Info: norbar.com

You need a torque wrench for three reasons. One: to make sure you don’t overtighten things, shear bolts and strip threads. Two: to ensure you don’t undertighten things, so that they fall out. Three: to ensure that, when it’s important, you tighten up multiple fasteners to the same amount of tightness. I’ve owned a Norbar torque wrench for 25 years (the one in the picture is the current equivalent). They’re good. The Pro 50 is probably the one you want for working on bikes. 3/8in drive, reversible, with a 10—50Nm (7.5—37.5 lb.ft) operating range. That should cover most of the fasteners on your bike. Anything more than 50Nm can be classified as ‘really tight’ and probably doesn’t warrant the accuracy required of smaller fasteners with finer threads. Norbar also offer a recalibration service, and after 25 years I guess it’s time that I sent mine off to be checked.
