‘If third gear seems problemati­c, steer clear’

Let’s be controvers­ial: the best trackday tyre is Metzeler’s Racetec RR Compk slick. There are stickier tyres, cheaper tyres, and for brilliant fast group riders there are tyres with better grip on the edge. But few match the Compk’s balance of performanc­e and economy. It’s built to work at lower temperatur­es as well as with maximum welly; I’ve never used a tyre as consistent and predictabl­e. Riding inthegroov­e with perfect weather and setup the Compk will fall short of Dunlop’s 212 GP, Krseries or Pirelli’s Diablo slicks. For everything outside of that moment, it’s marvellous. Rears are some £80 less than Dunlop KRS, fronts £60 less; rears will last around five trackdays versus a day or two for the KRS. A trackday tyre for our time.
