Harley-davidson Forty Eight Power: 55bhp Engine: 1202cc V-twin Economy: 45mpg

» When someone says ‘Harley-davidson’ it’s a Sportster model that pops into your head. In production since 1842, its air-cooled pushrod V-twin, traditional lines and direct sensations are the American brand’s signature. Which is probably why the Forty Eight is Harley’s best-selling UK bike. Feel, rumble and quality are spot-on, its hot-rod styling is on-trend – and at £9995 the Forty Eight is keenly priced too. If you’re willing to admit that secretly there’s always been space for a Harley in your garage, now is the time to buy a used one. For many reasons. First, the Forty Eight fits perfectly in today’s retro-loving biking world. Second, it’s a super-safe buy as they don’t go wrong. And third, you won’t lose money – you’ll have to dig deep to actually get one as H-D’S residual values are staggering, but if you find that you’re not building a relationship with the characterful V-twin then you can flog it a year down the line and make all your money back. Actually, you’ll probably get more money back. The long-running Sportster line-up looks set to disappear from Europe next year, killed off by Euro5 emission regs. It’s not financially viable for Harley to invest in the all-new motor required. As their defining model, it’s highly likely that values for used Forty Eights will start to climb.

Dealers offer extensive warranties with roadside assistance, and you’re guaranteed a well checked-over bike. Going private? Inspect the drive belt for tears and damage – they usually last 40,000 miles but stones can get inside the cover. Look for rust where the spokes join the rims too, and if it’s got noisy pipes make sure the fuelling is to suit.
