Winter trackday tips

-

Winter track days are cheap and if it’ s above 5-6 degrees there’ s no reason you can’ t have a great day. below that, your tyres will struggle to heat up and it could get a bit nerve-racking.

» Fit sports touring tyres. The Bridgestone RS11S on the R1M are fantastic when hot, but T31s would have heated up a lot faster and given more grip in the wet.

» If you’re on a road bike, try and find a road bike only group – No Limits do them. That stops you getting buzzed by GSX-RS with race wets on.

» Build up speed slowly, but do build it up. If it’s cold allow more time for the tyres to get up to temperature, then gradually pick up the pace. There’s no point dawdling because that won’t get any heat into the tyres. Don’t forget that the best way to warm the front is to brake hard.

» Take a Thermos of Bovril.
