I’d almost guarantee that the cheap C-spanner that came with your bike’s toolkit for adjusting suspension pre-load is bent, broken or missing, or about to be bent, broken or missing. Best invest in a decent quality adjustable C-spanner if you want to shift the pre-load collar without busting your knuckles when the original slips. Drench the collar in WD-40 or similar before you lean on it, and make sure that the spanner’s ‘hook’ snugly fits the indent on the collar.
