High-rise 1200

» Honda introduced the VFR1200X Crosstourer in 2012. It’s the same 1237cc V4 and aluminium frame as the 1200F, but with a lower state of tune (127bhp) and adventure bike suspension and wheels. Spec is higher too with more dash info, combined ABS, traction, plus a larger 21.5-litre tank.

Like the 1200F the Crosstourer is underrated. Many manufacturers have tried to replicate the any-road ability of the omnipresent BMW GS, and the Honda gets nearest: the rear end has the same surreal floaty ride, there’s easily as much on-road presence, and the gutsy V4 is not shy on character. It’s a tad topheavy but handles very well. Superb build quality too.

When buying, the same things apply for the V4 engine. Some bikes required replacement head bearings under warranty, so check the front end. Calipers can bind, and also check for leaky cracks in the corners of official accessory luggage.
