Confidence, grip... and velvety

Michelin Commander III Touring Used for: 1000 miles Price: £200 pair (120/70 R19, 180/65 B16)

» Forget dual compound nonsense and edge-grip twaddle. You want ‘velvet sidewall styling’ from Michelin’s ‘premium touch technology’, which uses sciencey stuff to create contrast and shading on the sidewall. I can’t notice anything with the Commanders on our long-term test BMW R18, but can vouch for confidence-boosting feel and gloopiness from the silica-rich rubber. Low, long, heavy bikes can work the front tyre hard but the Michelins are always secure. There’s enough grip and sense of connection to touch the ’pegs down in damp conditions, which is ace – you can pretty much ride the same regardless of conditions. BMW also fit Bridgestone Battlecruise to the R18, but go for one on Michelins –the tread looks better and Commander is a cooler name...
