Speed Limits

-

There were no speed cameras, and the cop cars relied on specially calibrated speedos which meant they could only follow miscreants who were going as slowly as them. Which we never were, so we more or less ignored them. However, speed was limited by the chassis and engine designs of the day which often meant vicious tank slappers on fast bends and, if you were especially unlucky, broken con-rods or seized pistons. It kept us on our toes.

Now it’s the other way round. Most bikes are capable of hilarious speeds, but you have to plan your routes carefully to avoid the cameras. The Peaks, Lakes, Yorkshire, the Lincolnshire Wolds, Wales and Scotland are still fabulous riding regions. The South East, not so much.
