Suspension & tyres
Suspension was rudimentary and in some cases, almost nonexistent – combined with heavily vibrating engines, it meant haemorrhoids were a necessary evil while holding a line invariably wasn’t. Tyres also left a lot to be desired. Avon offered a V-shaped item that was supposed to provide superior cornering but quickly earned the nickname ‘Deathmaster’, a bowdlerized version of Avon’s iconic Roadmaster.
Sports touring tyres allied to modern suspension offer more grip in the wet than most 1970s stuff did in the dry. We live in wondrously grippy times.
