Buy a used Buell Ulysses

The Pan Am is Harley’s first adventure bike, but Buell’s oddball Ulysses was H-D powered. They start at around £5000.

» 1202cc Sportster V-twin is reliable, but check for weepy rocker covers, a smooth idle, and cracked headers or broken studs.

» Wheel bearings fail, especially the rear. Inspect for play, and look for fraying and nicks in the drive belt.

» Test all the electrics work.
