Bou the Unbelievable
Gravity defying Spaniard bunny hops deeper into the record books
Toni Bou has just won his 29th world trials championship, lifting him further into the motorcycle sporting stratosphere. As Bike’s scientific graphic shows, in terms of world championship wins, Bou is by far and away the greatest motorcyclist who has ever lived, making the likes of Agostini, Lampkin and Everts look like flash-in-the-pan lightweights. OK, so we added Bou’s indoor and outdoor titles together, but even if we didn’t he still tops the list, tying with Ago. And it comes to something when riders like Mick
Doohan (five world championships) and Carl Fogarty (four WSB titles) can’t even get on the chart. Of course, it’s inconsequential really because it’s not a true judge of greatness as it takes no account of other feats – Freddie Spencer winning 250 and 500cc titles in the same year, John Surtees popping off to take an F1 championship, for example. But there’s no denying that Toni Bou has got the hang of trials.
