BALANCING ACT

An interesting thing to know is that the more ignition advance in an engine, the more aggressive (sharp responding) it feels. So on this map you can see there are areas, mainly linked to throttle position, where the ignition is reduced – retarded – to take away the aggression. And there are areas of midrange throttle opening where the ignition is ramped up to increase grunt.
