Helmet adjustments-simple tricks for noise and fit

- Hugo Wilson

Accelerated bedding in

» You tried on a helmet for five minutes in the shop, it felt perfect but after a fast two hour ride it’s causing discomfort. The liner will give a bit, but you can accelerate this by wearing it while watching telly, and applying some pressure to the problem area. Remove when you’ve got the in-laws round. Or not.

Height makes a difference

» If you are getting red marks on the forehead, or uncomfortable pressure on both sides of your skull, experiment with raising the helmet very slightly. Put a folded hanky on the top of your bonce, and then put the helmet on. If it works then look at doing a genuine fix using a proper pad, or foam.

Take it for custom fit

» Premium helmet manufacturers offer a custom fitting service with variations in padding for front to back, side to side, height and cheek pressure. Have the dealer you bought from explain how to make use of the fitting service. They visit dealers, or you can have it done in the BSB or TT paddock.

Noise reduction tricks

» The size of the helmet’s aperture and any empty space within the liner will affect how noisy it is. If you don’t use communication equipment then fill speaker voids with foam. Experiment with pushing a neckwarmer up, into the liner at the back and sides to reduce gaps in the aperture.
