The best connected man in the racing paddock, this month Peter bumped into former 125 GP racer Danny Webb

» Hello Danny, what are you up to this season?

I’m riding a Superstock Yamaha R1 for Wojcik Racing in the Endurance World Championship, but there’s only four rounds so I’ve got other projects, like the GP Camps for young racers. (Danny Webb GP camp on social media.)

» Do you enjoy endurance racing?

Honestly, when it’s 3am you ask yourself why you are doing it, but the feeling at the finish is amazing. You’re completely wiped out, but really satisfied. It’s incredible.

» Are any of the endurance events particular favourites?

Le Mans and the Bol d’or have an incredible atmosphere. Some of the fans don’t watch much of the racing, they just drink, so it’s like a 24 hour party. And it’ll be great to be back at Spa for the first time since we did the four hour classic race there. Well, actually, we did one hour before the bike broke but… It’ll be really special to do that on a Superstock bike.

» Seems like a while ago since you were a teenager in Grand Prix racing, what was that like?

It was an amazing experience. Looking back I could have done things differently, and that’s partly what I’m trying to help kids with my GP Camps, but I’m so glad to have had that time. Mostly I wish I’d had someone to calm me down a bit.

» Do you think it’s possible for young British riders to get into Motogp, or is the system stacked against them?

It’s really difficult. The amount of money involved now is huge so what I’m trying to do with the GP Camps is teach them how to be professional in their training, their diet and their attitude as well as some riding technique stuff. Spanish and Italian kids get it drilled into them early, and that is definitely an advantage.

» You’ve done a lot with Team Classic Suzuki over the past few years, is that still happening?

Any time they’ve got an RG500 that needs riding I’m there. They’re amazing bikes and that 115mph lap from a standing start at the Classic TT is one of the best things I’ve ever done.
