TWENTY YEARS AGO Maria Chilvers sat at her kitchen table and set out her vision for an outdoors clothing company that would be perfectly in tune with its customers. She had built up a huge amount of experience by running a buying office in the outdoor industry, and realised that no-one had identified that birdwatchers needed gear that was different to that used by walkers, climbers or other outdoor enthusiasts. By providing hard wearing waterproof clothing in subdued colours, with plenty of pockets and in low rustle fabrics, Country Innovation stole a march on the opposition and today it still remains way ahead of the pack. Over the years, Country Innovation has kept people warm and dry all over the world, and it is rare to go onto a bird reserve and not spot the Country Innovation logo somewhere. Many well-known bird/wildlife presenters and celebrities can also be seen in Country Innovation clothing and the company now donates part of the sale of any of their Linnet jackets to the Simon King Wildlife Project, a worthy cause whose aim is to take areas of neglected land and turn them back into wildlife havens. “I feel very proud of what Country Innovation has achieved over the past 20 years.
