1 This is one of the most scenic of the walks along Hadrian’s Wall with a large outcrop of whinsill making the Wall look amazing.
2 There is a steep set of steps to climb before rising onto the outcrop of whinsill. Check for Wheatears and pipits around the track.
3 The views from the top are wonderful. Look out for raptors and corvids hanging on the updraft from the cliff. Sycamore Gap gives you the most photographed Sycamore in the world, thanks to the
1991 film, Robin Hood, Prince of Thieves!
4 Check Crag Lough for breeding and wintering wildfowl. Listen for drumming Snipe in summer as well as the ‘pig squeal’ of Water Rail.
5 Make your way around the farm at Hotbank and follow the path back parallel with the whinsill. Look out for waders and a darting Merlin.
6 Winter sees many Fieldfare using the fields here and don’t be surprised by a hunting Hen Harrier or Goshawk.
