Four Great Northern Divers flew north (16th), a spring record until next day when six flew north. The sea was generally quiet except for a remarkable flock of 10 Pomarine Skuas that cut out from the Humber (25th). There were some good wader counts on the Humber including 8,000 Dunlin, 1,050 Grey Plover and 196 Sanderlings (11th). Kilnsea Wetlands also fared well with two Temminck’s Stints, two Wood Sandpipers and three Curlew Sandpipers mid-month as well as Spoonbill and a couple of Garganey. It was a good month for Red Kite passage with at least three some days but the star raptor was a Montagu’s Harrier (24th), when one of several passing Hooded Crows was also seen. A singing Nightingale was at Sammy’s Point (1st), with a Wood Warbler and six Pied Flycatchers next day. Early rain (4th) preceded the arrival of 113 Wheatears, 12 Whinchats, seven Redstarts and a Wood Warbler while both Wryneck and Firecrest were found next day. With predominating northerlies and rolling mist it was no surprise that drift migrants began to appear, heralded by the first of around six different Red-backed Shrikes (14th), when a Red-breasted Flycatcher was at the Warren. A male Bluethroat was at Cliff Farm (16th) and another gave amazing views in a garden at Driftwood (19th). A Quail came in off the sea (21st) and another was flushed (29th). Around six Marsh Warblers, two more Red-breasted Flycatchers, Icterine Warbler and a Golden Oriole completed a good month.
