We think of chalk down­land as a spring or early sum­mer habi­tat, but Septem­ber typ­i­cally sees an im­pres­sive fi­nal flour­ish. Among late-flow­er­ing plants, look for Au­tumn Gen­tian. In south­ern Eng­land, the se­cond brood of Ado­nis Blue joins the first of Chalkhill Blue and, in favoured lo­ca­tions, Sil­ver-spot­ted Skipper.
