Dunlin? Or Sanderling?
QWhile on holiday in Crete in September, my husband and I spotted several waders on rocks near the shoreline at Analipsi. I have driven myself mad, trying to ID this bird, and I cannot decide if it is a Dunlin or Sanderling. Can you please put me out of my misery? ‘Musicpainter’
AIt’s a Dunlin. Sanderlings in autumn are typically entirely grey and white, while this bird shows some rather rufous brown tones around the shoulder, which you’d expect to find in a juvenile/first-winter Dunlin. Dunlin can be very variable in terms of plumage, size, and length and curve of bill, so not surprisingly they’re another species that causes repeated ID problems, but master identifying them and you have a great ‘yardstick’ by which to compare other wader species.
