Test your coastal bird knowledge with this month’s challenge

Yes, it’s freezing; but it is supposed to be cold in December! Wrap up warm and face the weather, down at the coast. Here, a whole bunch of fascinating and beautiful birds are ignoring the chill and getting on with their winter holidays down by the seaside. And you can look at them in the warmth and comfort of your home. Coastal birds are a diverse bunch, from small seedeaters nibbling their way along the strand line or shingle banks to huge seabirds like Gannets powering along the shore. There may be waders or wildfowl and everything else. All you have to do, as usual, is identify and put a name to the birds in the photographs, then turn the page to see our solutions and answers. Then, turn the page once more to see a few identification tips for coastal birds (or any other birds for that matter). Good luck and happy Christmas!
