Bird Watching (UK)

KEY POINTS

-

1 Like many areas in Orkney, history is everywhere. This small settlement has a mixed bird life, especially on migration. 2 Drive along the narrow road checking the fields for waders, pipits, wagtails and buntings. Look out for harriers quartering the fields. 3 The Sands of Evie offer the chance for some passage waders along with resident breeders in summer. Scan out into the bay to look for sea ducks and divers. 4 The Broch itself offers the chance of Wheatears and chats in spring and summer. The higher ground can give good views into Eynhallow Sound to look for divers and seabird passage. 5 Back along the road check the trees around the school for migrants. Drive down the track to the cemetery to try for more migrants. If the weather turns for the worst, you can always drive up to the hide at Bulgar Hill for breeding skuas and moorland birds.
