Bird Watching (UK)

KEY POINTS

-

1 For a great walk, park by the farm buildings at the edge of the village and walk downstream on the Eden towards the big flood bank at Demesne, checking the river as you go for sawbills and a mixture of ducks and waders.

2 Once you reach the flood bank scan the marsh for a mixture of geese, ducks, waders and gulls. Check the tall drift wood for perched raptors.

3 An alternative view from the south side of the river is from Old Sandsfield. This drive can be on a muddy track but the car acts as a hide and you can watch the marsh and river in comfort. 4 The Old Boat House gives you great views over the marsh and restricted views of the scrape. You need a permit to enter the marsh from this point.

5 Another good viewpoint is from Gretna itself with height allowing you to watch another section of the marsh and a different river (the Esk).

6 Another viewpoint is at Old Graitney where there is often a big build-up of ducks and geese especially after the end of the shooting season. This can be great for gulls and waders as well.
