Bird Watching (UK)

WAYMARKERS

-

1 Begin at grid ref: 721 631 – walk to Burham village checking the hedges and the arable fields for garden birds, finches, Starling flocks and so forth before the slog begins… 2 The Scarp: There are two routes out of Burham which scale the down. As you walk look (and listen) for Nuthatch, Treecreeper, tit species, the odd Woodcock but also Badger, Fox and Stoat. Pause regularly and a Siskin could reward and maybe a Hawfinch (I have seen them twice here). 3 The North Downs Way meets you at the top of the scarp, if you use the pub here you can decide whether to walk through Bridge Woods – more productive mixed woodland - or continue north as I do along the famous path with woodland species on one side and grassland/farmland birds on the other. Raptors, corvids and gulls add to your log. 4 At grid ref: 725 650 a path takes you onto an unclassified lane allowing access to Burham or Wouldham. The fields have given me Lapwing and Golden Plover, Stock Dove, Wheatear and pipits.
