Nearly 40,000 Pochards winter in the UK. Compare that with the fewer than 700 breeding pairs and you can see that, perhaps contrary to your expectations, the Pochard is largely a winter visitor in the UK. And, as with all drakes, the handsome drake Pochard is looking its best in the depths of winter: with a crisp deep red head contrasting with a pale grey back and flanks with a black breast and tail end. So, now is the time to go out and admire this underrated diving duck.
