Given a mild winter, you may see your first Hazel catkins by late January (although mid-february is more typical). Attracting attention in the absence of leaves, the long, cylindrica­l, yellow flowers are all male. In contrast, the female flowers look like tiny buds. Each tree possesses both male and female flowers, but they can only be fertilised by pollen from another tree.
