Bird Watching (UK)

Not a wasp

High summer is great for watching hoverflies. The genus Chrysotoxum – no English names here, I’m afraid – comprises eight UK species of large and smart insects. Collectively these wasp mimics range over almost the whole of Britain – and location can help determine which species you are looking at. This is Chrysotoxum cautum, which favours grasslands and sunny rides in southern England and Wales.
