Bird Watching (UK)

Winter herons

Not so very long ago, if you said you had seen a heron in the UK, everyone would know you meant a Grey Heron (and many of us used the word heron interchangeably with Grey Heron, just as kite meant Red Kite). These days, most of us (especially in the southern half of the country) will expect to encounter at least a couple of heron species on a given day in the field. Little Egrets are common now, in many areas, but the other egrets are also far from the genuinely ‘rare’ birds they were until recently.
