Bird Watching (UK)
OWLS OF THE EASTERN ICE JONATHAN C SLAGHT, ALLEN LANE, HB £20
This is like reading a fictional adventure book, but it is really ‘real life’, based in the Far East of Russia. Blakiston’s Fish Owl may not be a bird you have seen much of, with an estimate of only about 1,000 pairs left alive, but it’s certainly worth saving; and what a read this account of it is!
Jonathan Slaught is an American, but is helped by speaking Russian, and by some dedicated Russian conservationists who help him to piece together the territories and habitat requirements that this bird needs to be protected in the future. What makes the book a real adventure is that they are working in land which also has Amur Tiger and Leopard living there, plus some very interesting characters.
