Seabird success
The Namibian Albatross Task Force is celebrating after a decade of work with the country’s fishing industry and fisheries managers resulted in a 98% reduction in seabird deaths as a result of longline fishing. The RSPB and BirdLife International established the ‘Albatross Task Force’ (ATF) in South America and southern Africa, to demonstrate simple measures that prevent birds being caught on longline fishing hooks. In Namibia, threatened species such as the Atlantic Yellow-nosed Albatross and White-chinned Petrel were badly affected.
