CARDIFF BAY: A Ring-necked Duck commuted between here and Cosmeston. There was a Long-tailed Duck, Scaup and Common Scoter. A Caspian Gull and five Yellow-legged Gulls frequented the roost.

KENFIG: A Russian White-fronted Goose was present (from 4th). Seven Whooper Swans and a Great White Egret were flyovers. A Great Northern Diver was on the pool. Another was off Sker, with 12 Red-throated Divers and an Eider. Two Marsh Harriers and a Merlin hunted. A sinensis-race Cormorant was seen. A Black Redstart was a brief visitor.

OGMORE ESTUARY: Two Water Pipits were at Portobello. Four Common Sandpipers was our highest winter site count. A Green Sandpiper was seen twice. Five Brent Geese flew up the river, having been seen earlier at Newton. A Red-breasted Merganser hung around for a few days. A Merlin was logged.

OTHER SITES: Cosmeston hosted a Glaucous Gull and Scaup. A Cattle Egret and Great White Egret were at Sully. A Red-breasted Merganser was at Clydach Vale. Thirty Goosanders were on Caerphilly Castle Moat. Fourteen pale-bellied Brent Geese were at Aberthaw. Another was at Newton, where the wader roost included 13 Grey Plovers. A Green Sandpiper survey on the River Ely returned a significan­t total of 12 individual­s. A Short-eared Owl was at Rumney Great Wharf. Black Redstarts were at Southerndo­wn, Cwm Mawr/Bach, Gileston, Cardiff Airport, Sully and Rumney Great Wharf. Paul Roberts
