A birding getaway in the region of Valencia
Close to the United Kingdom, the Region of Valencia has direct flights from airports in its three provincial capitals of Alicante, Valencia and Castellón. It enjoys an excellent yearround climate, with an average of 320 sunny days a year for outdoor activities.
There are a total of 22 natural parks in the region, divided between coastal and inland mountains, islands, and wetlands comprising marshes, salt flats and rivers. In addition, it is one of the most mountainous areas in Europe. This variety, along with a Mediterranean climate accentuated by the area’s north-south orientation, creates numerous habitats with much biodiversity and a great deal of beauty.
A Birding Escape
The Region of Valencia has considerable natural wealth and very attractive landscapes in which to enjoy an ornithological break. Among the many protected areas in the Natura 2000 network are 22 natural parks and no less than 40 special protection areas for birds. The wide variety of landscapes — unusual in other parts of Spain and in Europe — is characterised by mountainous areas higher than 1,800 metres, ancient forests, deep riverside canyons, coastal wetlands and marshes. In this great diversity of ecosystems, more than 300 different species of birds can be observed throughout the year. On migratory routes between northern Europe and Africa, it is an outstanding breeding and wintering area with incalculable value in terms of the number and diversity of species. As well as natural attractions, the Region of Valencia is rich in culture, history, architecture and, of course, gastronomy. When you consider that it is also easily reached, with good infrastructure and accessible accommodation for all nature lovers, you can see why this area in the south of Europe is converting itself into a fascinating destination for bird watchers.
