Highlights

Probably the region’s most exciting bird of the month was a male Desert Wheatear on the beach at Goring Gap, West Sussex, on 20th. Other cracking birds included a couple of Hume’s Leaf Warblers in Kent and East Sussex and a white- spotted Bluethroat trapped at Litlington, East Sussex at the end of the month.

BEDFORDSHI­RE

HIGHLIGHTS: Meadow Lane GP had a Green-winged Teal (to 10th) and Whitefront­ed Goose (to 25th). Black Redstarts were at Pulloxhill (22nd) and Blows Down (25th). A Ring Ouzel flew over Warden Hill (29th). Garganeys were at Battlesden Lake (20th-23rd), Priory CP (20th-29th), Radwell GP (two on 20th) and Broom GP (two on 22nd). Scaup were at Broom GP (20th), Grovebury SP (to 13th) and Brogboroug­h Lake (1st and 9th). Two Common Scoters were at Broom GP (1st). Avocets were at Begwary Brook (8th), Grovebury SP (20th) and Battlesden Lake (20th). A Little Ringed Plover was at Grovebury SP (5th).

BERKSHIRE

HIGHLIGHTS: A White Stork was seen from Thatcham Marsh and Reading Services (19th), then Dinton and Bracknell (20th). A White-tailed Eagle was at Coombe (8th). A Glossy Ibis was at Fobney (6th and 22nd-26th), Burghfield GP (20th) and Twyford GP (30th). The two White-fronted Geese remained at Padworth (to 14th), as did the Pink-footed Goose (to 7th). A Pinkfoot was at Hosehill (19th). A Cattle Egret was at Lea Farm (29th) and Twyford GP (30th). Theale GP had Avocet (1st) and Scaup (6th). Lower Farm held a Caspian Gull (11th) and Garganey (21st). Some 1,250 Bramblings were at Hampstead Norreys (3rd).

BUCKINGHAM­SHIRE

Avocets were at Willen Lakes (20th), with a Kittiwake (30th). A Black-tailed Godwit was at Gallows Bridge (20th). Cattle Egrets were at Linford GP (22nd-26th) and Little Marlow GP (29th). Eight Little Gulls were at Foxcote Reservoir (23rd-24th), with three at Little Marlow GP (23rd & 29th) and one at Startop’s End Reservoir (24th). Little Marlow GP had an Iceland Gull (10th a&19th), Rock Pipit (9th) and Spoonbill (20th). A Pink-footed Goose was at Drayton Beauchamp (30th-31st) and Eythrope (20th & 22nd). Whooper Swans were at Upper Tove Valley (8th) and Ickford (23rd). A Black Redstart was in a Great Brickhill garden (26th). A White-tailed Eagle was east of Milton Keynes (29th).

LITTLE MARLOW GP:

There were two Caspian Gulls, a Mediterran­ean Gull, Yellow- legged Gull (10th-12th), Dunlin (22nd), Pintail (24th-25th) and Great White Egret (4th).

OTHER SITES:

A Bittern was at Calvert BBOWT Lake (13th) and Linford GP (17th). One or two Great White Egrets were at eight sites. There were 32 Barnacle Geese at Olney (16th). A Ruddy Shelduck was at Linford (12th-13th and 19th). Seven Pintails were at Foxcote Reservoir (21st-29th) and three at Floodplain Forest (25th). Two Garganeys were at Linford GP (21st-22nd) and one at Linford Reservoir (24th). A Red- crested Pochard was at College Lake (to 13th). A Ringed Plover and Dunlin were at Dorney Common (4th). Jack Snipe were at College Lake (11th-13th), Stoke Common (21st), Gallows Bridge Farm (six on 6th) and Marlow Low Grounds (two, 28th-31st). Up to six Curlews and three Dunlin were at five sites each. A Med Gull was at Pitstone Quarry (14th). Two Yellow- legged Gulls were at Newton Leys (1st) and one at Passenham (8th). Four Caspian Gulls were at Newton Leys (1st) and one at Foxcote Reservoir (13th & 21st). White Wagtails were at Amersham Flood Meadows (18th) and South Heath (30th). A Ring Ouzel was at Incombe Hole (30th). Siberian Chiffchaff­s were at Magna Park, Milton Keynes (13th) and Watermead Lake (4th & 25th). A Tree Sparrow was at Upper Tove Valley (7th). There were 986 Golden Plovers at Passenham (4th). The first Wheatear was at Ivinghoe Beacon (12th) and Swallow at Haddenham (20th). Eythrope had a Garganey (20th), with two White Wagtails and a Yellow Wagtail (23rd).

HERTFORDSH­IRE

HIGHLIGHTS: A Glossy Ibis was at King’s Mead (8th). Wilstone Reservoir had a Green-winged Teal (from 24th), Kittiwake (5th), two Garganeys (22nd), six Little Gulls (23rd), plus three (30th), four Sandwich Terns (25th) and a Pink-footed Goose (from 30th). Four Little Gulls were at Startop’s End Reservoir (20th) with another (24th). Two were at Amwell (23rd) and three at Stanstead Innings (30th).The Serin remained at Woodoaks Farm, Maple Cross (to 18th). Black Redstarts were at Ellenbrook Fields (19th) and Berkhamste­d (27th). A Yellow Wagtail was at Hunsdon Airfield (19th). A Siberian Chiffchaff was at Berkhamste­d STW (15th). Stanboroug­h GP had a Stone Curlew (29th), Little Ringed Plover (3rd) and three Garganeys (17th). A Kumlien’s Gull was at Hatchpen Farm, Reed (1st-2nd). A Garganey was at Cheshunt GP (24th). KENT

HIGHLIGHTS: A White Stork was at Worth Marsh (2nd-30th), with others over Gravesend (15th), Shorne Marshes (15th), Bough Beech Reservoir (12th and 18th), Monks Wall (20th) and Snargate (27th). Two Black Redstarts were at Worth Marsh (28th). Seven Shore Larks were at Leysdown- onSea (2nd-26th). Cliffe Pools had a Spotted Redshank (3rd) with two (29th), a Glossy Ibis (5th & 15th), Temminck’s Stint (26th-31st) and two Little Stints (27th & 31st). Oare Marshes had a Green-winged Teal (5th-15th), Russian White-fronted Goose (5th) and two Water Pipits (10th). A Hume’s Leaf Warbler was at St Margaret’s at Cliffe (12th-27th), with a Black Redstart there (27th). A Dusky Warbler was at Fordwich (15th). A White-tailed Eagle flew over Chatham (13th), Sandwich Bay (15th), Worth Marsh and Pegwell Bay (23rd-24th) and Lympne (23rd). Dungeness RSPB had 11 Glossy Ibises, a Spoonbill (16th-19th), four Water Pipits, 12 Garganeys (18th-28th), four Cattle Egrets, and three White Wagtails (24th-25th).

A Black Brant was at Seasalter (18th-20th). A Serin sang at South Foreland (22nd). Stodmarsh had a Glossy Ibis (22nd-24th), three Cattle Egrets (24th), 15 Water Pipits (26th) and three Garganeys (27th).

SURREY

HIGHLIGHTS: Ring- necked Ducks were at Reigate (4th-27th) and Mercers CP (30th). A White Stork flew over Bookham Common (8th), with two at Tice’s Meadow (9th-10th) and two over Thursley Common (27th). A Glossy Ibis flew over Molesey Heath (10th). A White-tailed Eagle flew over Caterham (18th). A Hoopoe was at Molesey (17th).

SUSSEX

EAST SUSSEX: The Hume’s Leaf Warbler remained around Eastbourne (to 25th). Rye Harbour had a Green-winged Teal (2nd-14th) and Iceland Gull (2nd-5th). Poundgate had a Little Bunting (8th-12th) and Hen Harrier (8th). A White Stork flew over Barcombe Cross (13th). A White-tailed Eagle flew over Brighton (21st). A white-spotted Bluethroat was ringed at Litlington (31st).

WEST SUSSEX: A Black Brant was at Thorney Island (3rd-17th). Pagham Harbour had six Glossy Ibises, 56 Cattle Egrets, a Short- eared Owl (5th-17th), Wheatear (17th) and White-tailed Eagle (21st). A White Stork flew over Warnham (15th), with one at Pulborough Brooks (18th & 22nd-26th), four (27th), eight (29th), and one at Hardham (23rd). Two White-tailed Eagles were at Pulborough Brooks (29th) and one at Amberley Wild Brooks (30th). Chichester GP had a Bonaparte’s Gull (22nd-30th). A Desert Wheatear was at Goring- by- Sea (20th). A Glossy Ibis was at Ructon (31st).
