White-wingers
GULLS. Not everyone loves them, but these clever and adaptive birds undeniably offer some great photo opportunities thanks to their frequent cohabitation with humans. With a penchant for favouring seafronts, ports, harbours, country parks and even suburban playing fields, there’s no denying that they feature prominently in our daily lives.
With a decent influx under way across the country, and following on from Josh Jones’s recent ID guide (Birdwatch 342: 32-37), it’s fitting that the subject of February’s photo challenge is whitewinged gulls – we want to see your best photos of Iceland or Glaucous Gulls this month.
We appreciate that lockdown is affecting pretty much everyone across
Britain at present and we’re not expecting plenty of opportunities to see either species anytime soon, but dig deep into your archives for your best portraits of this striking pair – we look forward to seeing them!
The winner will receive a copy of Behind the Binoculars by Mark Avery and Keith Betton. ■
