ID photo guide: Eurasian Skylark, Woodlark and Crested Lark

-

Eurasian Skylark and Woodlark are found in UK, though the latter is localised; Crested Lark is a vagrant. Kate Risely explains how to separate all three.

1 Adult Eurasian Skylark (Rainham Marshes RSPB, Essex, 29 April 2010). The Lark Ascending: singing Eurasian Skylarks can hover up to 150 m in the air, barely visible to the eye and identified only by their characteristic, continuous song. The colour and plumage patterns of larks tend to be similar between species, so it helps to be familiar with shape and structure. Visible in this photo are Eurasian Skylark’s white outer tail feathers and relatively short, stubby bill.
