April photo challenge winner

GARGANEY is one of our rarest and most secretive ducks, and obtaining a good view anywhere – Britain, Ireland or further afield – can be very tricky. Nonetheless our readers managed to get some great photos of this species, but ultimately we felt that the stand-out shot was this one by Robert Mitchell. A cracking male in pristine plumage, we loved the soft light conditions and the reflection off the water’s surface. Robert wins a copy of RSPB Guide to Birdsong by Adrian Thomas. Well done! ■
