Veery (Whalsay, Shetland, 4 October 2009).

-

9 This is often a typical view of a rare American thrush when it pops out of cover. The bright rufous crown and greyer ear coverts, blending into a rich buff wash across the upper breast with muted brownish spots, should get you to Veery quickly. The pale throat, as well as the paler, whitish underparts and relatively long, pink legs are good supporting characters. The eyering, as in Grey- cheeked, is generally lacking, but in good light it may show as a thin, pale orbital ring.
