October photo challenge winner

WE received a relatively low number of entries to the October challenge, with Redbreasted Flycatcher proving a tricky subject for Birdwatch readers. That said, there were some cracking shots among those that came in – not least this brilliant image taken in mid-October 2021 on St Mary’s, Scilly, by Ted Smith. Ted has caught the bird in an engaging, almost pensive pose, with the flycatcher showing off just about every feature of its plumage – including that lovely apricot-buff wash to the throat, breast and flanks. Depth of field on this image suggests it was very close and showing rather well, so Ted must’ve been made up with the opportunity afforded to him! A copy of The Eternal Season by Stephen Rutt is on its way to Ted. Well done! ■
