Great Northern Diver
DIVERS are always a favourite with birders. While many sightings of this family often involve birds flying past headlands or bobbing distantly offshore, some individuals will buck the trend and give great views on coastal or inland waterbodies. Easily the showiest of the three regular species is Great Northern Diver – although it doesn’t breed on our shores, it is quite regular around some coasts in the winter months and is comfortably the most numerous inland. It can also be rather tame at times.
With that in mind, Great
Northern makes for an ideal midwinter photo challenge – we want to see your best images of this majestic visitor, taken at any season. A copy of British Birds: A Pocket Guide by Rob Hume, Robert Still, Andy Swash, Hugh Harrop and David Tipling is up for grabs for the winner. Good luck! ■
