Chance to quiz chairman of new press watchdog

- Adrian Goldberg

AN EVENT is being held in Birmingham next month to mark the second anniversary of the new UK regulator the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

BBC WM’s breakfast show host Adrian Goldberg will chair the meeting on September 14 which is being held in partnership with our sister title Birmingham Mail and Birmingham Press Club.

The panel discussion and Q&A will focus on press regulation in 2016 and offer members of the public, community groups, local politicians and journalism students the chance to hear from the watchdog.

IPSO regulates the majority of the UK press, including national and local newspapers and magazines, encompassing all the significant titles in the Midlands.

On the panel will be IPSO’s chairman Sir Alan Moses, Express & Star editor Keith Harrison and Paul Mottram, head of legal and compliance for Trinity Mirror which publishes the Birmingham Post and Mail.

Other panellists are expected to be added over the next few weeks.

Mr Goldberg said: “Newspapers, whether online or in print, remain a very important part of how local communities define themselves and find out what is going on where they live.

“I’m very pleased to have the chance to chair the IPSO public meeting in Birmingham and look forward to seeing members of the public quiz the people who are responsible for press standards and dealing with complaints about press wrongdoing.”

Sir Alan said: “Regulators can be distant and opaque organisations but I am determined to make IPSO as accessible and open as I possibly can.

“I would encourage anyone with an interest in how the press works and is regulated to come to the meeting and contribute to what I hope will be a fascinating evening.”

It starts at 6.30pm and will be held in the offices of KPMG at One Snowhill in Birmingham city centre.

The meeting is open to all but please email vikki.julian@ipso.co.uk to confirm attendance.
