Homes cost more to buy near to city’s top schools

-

HOMES near Birmingham’s top state schools cost £80,000 more on average than homes near schools performing poorly.

Parents can expect to pay a premium to live near schools in the top 20 per cent of national results leader-board.

Families living near Tudor Grange Academy or St Peter’s Catholic School and Specialist Science College in Solihull can expect to stump up an average of £355,000 for a house near the top performers.

In Sutton Coldfield, parents can expect to pay an average of £285,000 if they live near Arthur Terry School, one of the top state schools in the city.

Data from the Land Registry analysed by the Post showed the average house price near non-selective state schools which were in the top fifth for GCSE results nationally was £212,007.

In contrast, house prices around schools that are in the bottom 20 per cent nationally average just £132,823, a difference of almost £80,000.

Bishop Challoner Catholic College in Kings Heath was one of the best performing state schools in the area last year, with 74 per cent of its students achieving five GCSEs at A* to C including English and maths.

Houses in the B14 postcode area around Kings Heath in the south of the city will set you back an average of £216,250.

But just two miles away in Druids Heath, houses which neighbour the failing Baverstock Academy, fetch an average price of just £139,975.

Baverstock Academy, which announced in July it was set to close next year, only achieved 34 per cent five A* to C grades in 2015.

The analysis calculated the average house price in each postcode in the UK according to price paid data from the Land Registry for 2015 and 2016.

Nationally, it was found that the average house price in postcodes containing schools performing in the top 20 per cent in GCSEs was £309,841, compared to £177,319 for those in the bottom 20 per cent.
