Rowett challenges Ryan to give it his best Shott
laid-back character and sometimes that comes out in training. That’s why I’ve spoken to him and said ‘Look, if you want to be the best defender in this league, then every day you’ve got to be the best defender in this league and not just on a Saturday or a Tuesday night’,’’ said Rowett (pictured right).
“But he’s shown lots of hallmarks of what you want from a centre-back and I’ve been really pleased with him.
“You show me another defender in this league who can physically do what he wants.
“He’s probably quick as any defender. He’s as strong as any defend- as er, he’s got two good feet, he’s good in the air. He’s showing leadership qualities. So I’ve basically described every attribute that you would want. “His concentration is improving. Making better decisions in games is improving, which I think are areas which needed to improve.” Rowett believes Shotton’s pace has been part of the team’s shift to defending higher up the pitch and with a midfield four. “With Ryan’s extra athleticism and no less defensive quality that’s been a good reason why we’ve been able to change the way we’ve played. That was something we were mindful of bringing him in. I wouldn’t say he’s surprised me because we always feel we can get the best out of players.
“We’re starting to see something like the best of Ryan but there’s a lot more to come and he’s not at his best yet.
“It’s only a few games but if I’m sat here after 46 saying ‘Ryan has been absolutely immense’, then I’d be really happy. But at the minute he’s started really positively.
“I never like to heap too much praise on players but, legitimately, at the minute the two of them (Shotton and Morrison) are forming a very strong defensive pairing and our aim will be to make that the best defensive pairing and back five in the division.”
