ABIRMINGHAM accident and emergency consultant has been charged with committing three sex assaults. Vibhore Gupta, based at Edgbaston’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, will appear before Birmingham magistrates on Tuesday, November 21.

As well as the three sexual assault charges, the 52-year-old consultant faces one count of assault.

Mr Gupta is described as a consultant in emergency medicine on University Hospitals Birmingham website.

His area of professional interest is military medicine. A member of the A&E team told the Birmingham Post that he is also technical service head.

He is a highly respected member of the medical community and in 2013 added his weight to the West Midlands Police ‘Knives End Lives’ campaign, aimed at raising awareness of the perils of carrying a knife.

At the time Mr Gupta said medical teams were having to deal with two serious knife cases every week.

A year later he featured in an ITV programme on the work of the QE’s accident and emergency department. He was described as consultant in charge of the A&E department on the day the camera crew filmed.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said: “A 52-year-old man from Harborne has been charged with three counts of sexual assault and one count of assault. Vibhore Gupta was arrested in March this year following a report made to the police. The doctor is due to appear at Birmingham Magistrates Court on Tuesday November 21.”

A spokeswoman for the Queen Elizabeth said: “As this is a police matter, we are not, at the present time, prepared to comment.”

She would not confirm or deny that Mr Gupta was currently suspended.

When the Post rang the A&E department, a staff member said he was currently unavailable.
