ONE of Britain’s leading transplant surgeons, who performed a life-saving operation on a Birmingham MP, has been given an MBE in the New Year’s Honours list.

Andrew Ready, who is based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, was the medic who carried out the kidney transplant surgery on Perry Barr MP Khalid Mahmood.

He has also led transplant teams on numerous missions to the developing world, including Ghana, Nigeria, Egypt, Trinidad, Nepal, Jamaica and Kenya, to carry out vital operations and share expertise with local surgeons.

Mr Ready, who lives in Solihull, is medical director of the international Transplant Links charity, which promotes such international exchanges.

He is among a number of people from Birmingham and the West Midlands to pick up honours:

A pioneer of adult education and lifelong learning, Professor Alan Tuckett has been knighted. Based at the University of Wolverhampton, he has promoted lifelong learning around the world and has been recognised by a range of international organisations.

Charlie Fogarty, 21, is made an MBE for services to young people in Solihull.

His hopes of a career in football were cut short after a car accident at the age of 15 left him with brain damage and in a coma for six months.

He set up Solihull Moors FC disability open age team and is a regu- lar for the Northern Ireland cerebral palsy team. Living in Shirley, he has been a Pride of Britain awards runner-up and delivers speeches on the care of young people after brain damage.

Cindy Beckford, 55, of Great Barr, becomes an MBE. She set up Network Rail’s first Black Asian Minority Ethnic employee network, called Cultural Fusion, in 2013.

Rose Cadbury, made an MBE at the age of 83, is President of the Friends of Bournville Carillon charity and spent 50 years working with Bournville Junior and Infant schools. She has also provided financial support for young dancers to get professional training.

Diana Seeney, 76 of Kingswinford, gets an MBE after 67 years’ service with the Girls’ Brigade. She has founded groups, supported the Smile International development charity and enabled hundreds of Girls’ Brigade members to visit the Smile Centre in Kosova, Eastern Europe.

Inez Henriques, 91 of Wolverhampton, gets an MBE, having been chairwoman of the West Midlands Caribbean Parents and Friends Association since 1996.

She has campaigned against racial discrimination and supported the community with health, education and established healthy cooking sessions and meals for the housebound.
