Ex Michelin-star chef Turner takes helm at new restaurant
AN acclaimed Michelin-starred chef has returned to the kitchen six months after the surprise closure of his Birmingham restaurant.
Richard Turner is now the face of the new Maribel restaurant, housed in the former Edmunds Bistro de Luxe, in Brindleyplace.
The original Turners, in Harborne High Street, won a Michelin star in 2009, but in June 2016 the chef rebranded it as Turners at 69, offering a more casual style of food.
The restaurant still went on to receive 3AA rosettes for culinary excellence in the AA 2017-2018 Restaurant Guide, but then closed out of the blue in January.
Now the owners of Maribel have brought the talented chef in to create their menu and run the kitchen.
Edmunds – which was rebranded as Edmunds Bistro de Luxe in recent years – shut down within the last month without explanation.
It was led by renowned chef Didier Philpot.
The new Maribel restaurant, which serves Frenchinfluenced modern British cooking ‘in a relaxed environment’, opened last Friday.
It is certainly a return to high end cooking for Turner, with a tasting menu of 11 dishes costing £85.
Dishes include Red mullet, carrot, spring onion, buttermilk, raisin, coriander, and sour dough as well as Hogget, wild garlic, St George’s and thyme plus Lincolnshire poacher, toast and brown sauce.
There is also a three- course à la carte menu.
Turner said: “I am excited by the opportunity of cooking at a prestigious location in the city centre.
“Diners in Birmingham now have some great options for gastronomic experiences and it is our sincere hope that Maribel will enhance the city’s reputation as a top food destination.
“I am so grateful for all the support I have received during my career in Birmingham, both from customers and fellow professionals, and it my intention, as always, to let the quality of my food speak for itself.”
