Runners get ready to stride out for Great Birmingham 10k

-

THE countdown to one of the biggest days in the Second City’s sporting calendar is under way as enthusiasts hit the streets for the Great Birmingham 10k Run on Sunday.

Organisers are hoping for a repeat of last year’s successful event which raised more than £1.4 million for local and national good causes.

Various waves of runners will set off between 10.15am and 11.20am, running as individuals and as teams.

The University of Birmingham will be out in force, with hundreds of runners in the UBSport team.

Not to be outdone, Birmingham City University will also be entering a huge team.

And professional services giant PwC will have a team of 200 runners as they bid for trophies in the Business Challenge.

The event will start at Jennens Road, behind Millennium Point, and continue through Digbeth and out along Pershore Road through Edgbaston to Cannon Hill Park, before returning to the finish line at Curzon Street.

Last year’s route has been altered to remove a notorious hill up Lee Bank Middleway and Centenary Square, which is being redeveloped.

A goody bag will await all the successful finishers, who will be supported by drink stations and bands along the way.

More than 20 roads in Birmingham will close. Various closures start at 4am, with others at 8am and one at 9.30am. Roads reopen at noon, 1pm, 1.45pm, 2pm, 2.15pm and 4pm.
