Teenager sus­pected of be­ing a slave

A TEENAGER has been res­cued af­ter it was sus­pected he was be­ing used as a slave.

There were fears the 18-yearold Ro­ma­nian male was be­ing con­trolled and ex­ploited by an older man in Erd­ing­ton dur­ing the past three months, po­lice said.

In­ves­ti­ga­tors from the Gang­mas­ters and Labour Abuse Au­thor­ity (GLAA) and of­fi­cers from West Mid­lands Po­lice staged an op­er­a­tion to res­cue the man on Tues­day.

The vic­tim has been safe­guarded and he will re­ceive the help he needs through the Na­tional Re­fer­ral Mech­a­nism (NRM), a frame­work for en­sur­ing po­ten­tial mod­ern slav­ery vic­tims re­ceive the help and sup­port that they need.

A 27-year-old Ro­ma­nian man was ar­rested on sus­pi­cion of a mod­ern slav­ery of­fence.

He has now been re­leased un­der in­ves­ti­ga­tion pend­ing fur­ther en­quiries.

GLAA of­fi­cers also used their Po­lice and Crim­i­nal Ev­i­dence Act 1984 (PACE) pow­ers to search and seize ev­i­dence.
