All black cabs to take cards
ALL black cabs in Birmingham will have card machines by January 2020.
The council has passed a proposal to make the devices compulsory.
However, the move has been pushed back by more than a year because many Hackney Carriage drivers will have to replace their vehicles to be compliant with the new Clean Air Zone set to be introduced within the city ring road by January 1, 2020.
The council said it would be unfair for drivers to have card machines fitted only to then have to pay upwards of £45,000 for a new black cab which is compliant with the emissions threshold.
Meanwhile, dozens of black cabs are to be fitted with new roof-top advertising screens, which will also provide ‘critical’ public information alerts.
As well as promoting . businesses, the signs will also be able to display realtime breaking news, weather, emergency and traffic advice as well as post details of large public events.
They will be launched in the city from October 1.
However, some councillors did raise concerns over the nature of the adverts, whether they would be too bright and if they would distract other motorists.
