Dire bud­get warn­ing as ser­vice ‘bleeds cash’

IRMINGHAM City Coun­cil faces a tip­ping point af­ter a £3.5 mil­lion black hole ap­peared in its be­lea­guered schools trans­port ser­vice, coun­cil­lors have warned.

The ser­vice has al­ready come un­der fire from hard-pressed par­ents af­ter buses and chap­er­ones for many spe­cial needs chil­dren were with­drawn. For­mer deputy coun­cil leader Paul Til­s­ley said it could be the “straw that breaks the camel’s back” as the au­thor­ity strives to save £100 mil­lion in un­der 18 months.
